BARMALJOVA is the duet project of vocalist INNA BARMASH and violist/composer/arranger LEV 'LJOVA' ZHURBIN. Tonight, they will perform a set of folk songs from America, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Italy, France, and other lands. Some of these were arranged by Romantic-era composer Luciano Berio; others they found on their own.
LUCIA PULIDO is a Colombian singer with one of the richest voices on the international Latin American musical scene today. She has mined the musical traditions of her native Colombia and other Latin American countries in an ongoing search for a distinct, experimental style, and has participated in projects ranging from traditional Colombian music to jazz and "Nueva Canción" (New Song). Tonight, she performs with the eclectic bassist STOMU TAKEISHI.
SXIP SHIREY & SARAH ALDEN. will present 3 duets, a Moldavian number, a new piece for guitar and alternative tuned violin and an interpretation of a greek chorus from Euripides' Woman of Troy featuring voice, violin, melodica, reverse disc music box (the Mr. Christmas model), shruti box and color coded bells.

name your candidate - vote
In January 2008, Ljova acquired a new 6-string acoustic instrument, built by Eric Aceto. It has the sounding range of the violin, the viola, and most of the cello, all in a package slightly larger than a violin.
Between January 26 and May 31, Ljova's friends and fans contributed names on his blog; now you get to vote on your favorites! Author of the best submission will win autographed CDs, as well as Ljova's gratitude.
Voting ended on August 31st -- and the winner is -- FAMIOLA.
Thank you to all who voted!

Ljova and the Kontraband at Trinity Church

"In an exuberant show that went on for well over their allotted hour onstage, the group blended fiery gypsy dances, rustically melancholy songs without words, intricately and imaginatively arranged jazz and potently crescendoing classical melodies, often in the same song... This concert was exhilarating, transcendent, a blast."
